STS BODY FAT TESTING CENTER
"Ideal Weight Is Good. Ideal Body Fat Is Better!"
Tape Measurement Method (Katch and McArdle)
- This method of Body Fat Testing is for people without experience and/or equipment.
- This tape measurement method is 3.5% (+ or -) as accurate as a hydrostatic water tank test ($50 to $100) and .7% (+ or -) as accurate as a multi-site skin caliper test ($15 to $25).
- All methods of testing Body Fat, including the Hydrostatic Water Tank, are estimates!
- Any changes in your Body Fat percentage (gain or loss) between two tests are accurate if you use the same test method consistently!
- A 1/4 inch is important to the accuracy of the Katch and McArdle Tape Method!
- To be accurate you must take the tape measurement on skin and not over clothing!
- A high Body Fat percentage is a health risk factor as well as an indicator of low fitness. However, Body Fat does not indicate the cholesterol in blood or the plaque in arteries.
The Katch and McArdle Body Fat Test Ranges
- The Katch and McArdle Tape Method Body Fat Test is not effective for persons with inch measurements outside of these ranges.
- If you fall outside these ranges use a different Body Fat test method like skin calipers or the Hydrostatic Water Tank.
